Death came to the town,
ridding a black stead of metal dark,
Death came to take me down,
to the infernal pit of damnation,
Death came to the town.
Silently she came to me,
and spoke in my ear :
"Long thou hast lived,
long thou hast loved,
long thou hast been,
now I shall thee take,
to the fiery lake,
and there shalt thou dance,
with nor music nor sound,
alone in the shadows,
thou shalt dance"
"Oh Lady Death,
take me not into thy pit,
for I have friend and love,
and the await me,
by the door.
If shalt thou take me,
whom shalt they love
whom shalt they befriend?"
"Thou hast neither friends
nor hast thou got love,
for the love thou hast had,
it is gone and lost."
"Death, wicked Death!
I have friends,
lest thou hast killed them.
Death, dark evil Death!
I have love,
lest thou hast killed her!"
"Thy friends, befriend ye not,
and thy love, loves ye not.
I killed them not,
for at their request I came,
to take thee into the dark pit,
from where thou shalt not return"
"TAKE ME THEN,
AND TAKE ME QUICK!
TAKE ME THEN.
AWAY FROM THEM!"
